Elcano, restoring his memory

2017/10/11 > 2018/02/18

Exhibition about the project of the Canary architect Miguel Martin Fernandez de la Torre for the construction of a grandiose monument on the occasion of the IV Centenary of the First Round the World of Juan Sebastián de Elcano. This project was the winner of the contest organized in 1921 but was not built.

Aware of the ignorance at international level of the figure of Juan Sebastián Elcano, the Board of the Fourth Centenary of the First Circumnavigation of the Globe organised in 1920 a competition for the construction of a grand monument at the summit of Mount San Anton in Getaria (Gipuzkoa).

The winning project, which never came to fruition, was the work of the rationalist architect Miguel Martín Fernández de la Torre (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1894-1980), in collaboration with his brother Néstor (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1887-1938), a modernist and symbolist painter.

The magnificent collection of drawings and designs of this monument project in honour of Elcano proposes models of architectonic synthesis, with traces of regionalist styles, and develops a prior study of the materials native to the region and their impact on the landscape.

These works were forgotten and abandoned for decades. They were subjected to serious damage and even theft. The majority were discovered five years ago, and they have recovered their original magnificence thanks to a specific restoration promoted by the Town Council of Getaria, which has also benefited from collaboration with the Regional Government of Gipuzkoa and the Basque Government.

Painting restoration

During the exhibition, the piece of the collection that was originally stolen will be restored in the museum itself to visitors. Through the Museum website we will follow the different phases of the restoration process. + info.

During the exhibition, the piece which was originally stolen will undergo restoration in the museum itself before the eyes of visitors. This restoration will be financed through a crowdfunding campaign. All the symbolic contributions of those people who wish to participate represent a great community value which enriches the process of restoration of the memory of the great mariner in the context of the forthcoming Fifth Centenary of the First Circumnavigation of the Globe.  There are two ways of making your contribution:  through the VERKAMI platform, at the following website: or making an on-the-spot donation, here in the museum. You can freely contribute the amount of your choice.
