Euskal Itsas Museoa

Past exhibitions

From its opening in 1991 up to 2007 the two main floors of the Museum were home to a permanent exhibition that provided an overview of the relationship between the Basques and the sea over the centuries, with the emphasis on shipbuilding.

In 2007 the concept of the museum was changed and the two main floors came to host long-duration temporary exhibitions. The 6 exhibitions of this kind staged to date are the following: “San Sebastián, ciudad marítima” [”San Sebastian, Maritime City”], “Los vascos y el Pacífico. Homenaje a Andrés de Urdaneta” [“The Basques & the Pacific. A Tribute to Andrés de Urdaneta”], "Cazadores de ballenas" [“Whalers”], "1813. Asedio, incendio y reconstrucción de San Sebastián" [“1813: The Siege, Burning & Reconstruction of San Sebastián”], "La costa guipuzcoana en el arte" [“The Coast of Gipuzkoa in Art”] and “La gran pesca del bacalao” [“The big cod fishery”].

The full list of temporary exhibitions staged to date is as follows:

Juan de Alcega. Universal tailor

The exhibition lasts until October 13, 2019 (From April 3 to September 29, 2019)

The Basque Maritime Museum recovers the figure of Juan de Alcega, an illustrious figure from Gipuzkoa that memory has forgotten. He is the author of the first tailoring treaty published in Europe that under the title "Libro de geometria, pratica y traça, el qual trata de lo tocante al officio de sastre" ("Book of geometry, practice and traça, which deals with the subject of the tailor's office"), saw the light for the first time in Madrid in the year 1580 and it was reissued in 1589.
