Elcano, the legacy of the 4th Centenary

2017/12/11 > 2018/02/18

The 4th Centenary of the First Circumnavigation of the Globe Committee felt a strong desire to create a large sculptural group in honour of Elcano, but this proved impossible. However, far from throwing in the towel, the same Committee promoted a series of actions (conferences, exhibitions, pictorial and performance commissions), which have survived until today.

To mark the 4th centenary, the first performance of the disembarkation of Elcano took place, and significant civil engineering projects were finished in the town of Getaria: the town hall building, the fishermen’s hostel and the extension of the port of refuge.

Alongside this, a particular iconography of the figure of Elcano and his epic achievement was gradually shaped through the work of different artists. Elías Salaverría, Ignacio de Zuloaga and Pablo Uranga, among other artists, took part in this constructive process.

Commemoration of the first circumnavigation of the globe was not restricted to our territory. Cities such as Madrid and Seville made contributions which helped to make this illustrious seafarer’s achievements better known. As examples, we can highlight the sculpture by Ricardo Bellver and the panel of the Virgin of Antiquity given to Getaria by the the cities of Madrid and Seville respectively.
