It forms part of the Department of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sport&#8217;s Culture Area&#8217;s Historical-Artistic Heritage, Museums and Archives Service.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/itsasmuseoa.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Banner_WEB_3-2023-10-10T114054.563.jpg\" alt=\"Banner_WEB_3 - 2023-10-10T114054.563\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"1200\" width=\"1800\" title=\"Banner_WEB_3 - 2023-10-10T114054.563\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\"  \/>\n\t\t<h2>\n\t\t\tThe building\n\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\tThe Museum was opened in 1991 as the Naval Museum in the former San Sebasti\u00e1n Merchants&#8217; Guild Tower-House, a building in the port which dates back to the mid-18th century.\nThis remarkable building is one of the few civil constructions spared when the city was destroyed in 1813, and the only architectural relic of the San Sebasti\u00e1n Merchants&#8217; Guild. The building was used to monitor harbour operations, collect taxes, and keep the wharves in good condition. It was also tasked with maritime rescue operations and maintaining order in the port.
