Item: Piece of eight

This item is a silver “piece of eight” coin, struck in Mexico in 1741, and taken aboard the Hollandia vessel, the property of the Dutch West Indies Company, in 1743, which was sailing to Batavia (Surinam), and was shipwrecked in England. It was salvaged in 1968, donated to the Naval Museum in 2005, and exhibited at the Basque Maritime Museum in 2020.

The first item exhibited in the Basque Maritime Museum’s Musealiak space is a bronze bell made for an English sailing boat in 1867.
